Safe As Houses

Safe As Houses: Recommendations for child safe rental properties in New Zealand. This publication gives rental property owners and managers an overview of child unintentional injuries in New Zealand and how to prevent them. Between 2012-2016 an average of 36 children aged 0 to 14 years died each year from unintentional injuries sustained in a home environment.

Children aged 0 to 4 years accounted for 32 (90 percent) of these deaths per year and over a five-year period to 2018, a total of 12,618 children aged between 0 to 14 years were admitted to hospital due to suffering an unintentional injury within the home environment.

In ‘Safe As Houses’ we offer owners and managers a set of recommendations that, taken together and over time, should reduce what is an unacceptably high burden of child injury in New Zealand.
