Starship clinical guidelines

General notes

  • Beware Monteggia variants/associated radial neck injuries

  • The Monteggia fracture is a fracture of the proximal third of the ulna with subluxation/dislocation of the proximal head of the radius

Isolated, undisplaced/stable fracture

Above elbow plaster of paris backslab applied

 First appointment

  • 7 - 10 days post-injury (with x-ray)

Fracture clinic review

  • At 4 weeks post injury (cast removal with x-ray and mobilise)

Discharge advice for family

  • See GP if any subsequent deterioration in elbow function/development of symptoms

Displaced/unstable/combined injuries (treated operatively)

 First appointment

  • At 7-10 post operative for wound check and x-ray

Fracture clinic review

  • At 6 weeks post operative (cast removal with x-ray mobilisation and plan for metalware removal if present)

Discharge advice for family

  • See GP if any subsequent deterioration in elbow function/development of symptoms
