Maternity care while dependant is a patient at Starship
If a pregnant woman presents with her child to Starship, the child's clinician should check to make sure she is receiving maternity care.
Most pregnant women in New Zealand are entitled to maternity care. The eligibility can be verified from: https://www.health.govt.nz/new-zealand-health-system/publicly-funded-health-and-disability-services/pregnancy-services

If a pregnant woman presents with her child to Starship, the child's clinician should check to make sure she is receiving maternity care. If she has a lead maternity carer (LMC) able to provide care within the Auckland region and no acute concerns, she should continue to receive care and advice from her current LMC.
If she does not have an LMC available to provide care while in the Auckland region and no concerns are identified, an LMC from Te Toka Tumai can be organised by contacting the Maternity Walk-in Centre (phone ext 27549). The Community Midwifery LMC Referral Form needs to be completed by the pregnant woman. This form is then emailed to walkincenter@adhb.govt.nz. A Community Midwife will then contact the pregnant woman directly.
If the pregnant woman has a concern and is either unable to contact her LMC or does not have a maternity care provider, the first point of contact is the Labour and Birthing Unit on level 9, Auckland City Hospital (phone (09) 307 2888 for advice, 24 hours a day). The Te Toka Tumai maternity service will provide care for the woman as required.
In case of an acute concern in pregnancy, call (09) 307 2888 for advice.
In case of an acute concern in the postnatal period (less than 6 weeks after birth), call Tamaki Ward on ext 25630.
If a newborn baby is transferred to Starship and the mother is transferred with the child, maternity care should ALWAYS be organised for the mother. This can be done by:
Contacting the LMC (if in Auckland region and able to travel), or
The Te Toka Tumai Community Midwifery LMC Referral form must be completed and signed by the mother or next of kin to be scanned and emailed to the Community Midwives Office on commreports@adhb.govt.nz . An accompanying voice message must also be left for the Community midwives on 09 630 9943 ext 28258. Messages are picked up 7 days a week.
