Professional development

Nursing professional development in Starship has established credibility for delivering robust, evidenced-based and tamariki and whānau centric nursing education. We value nursing education and align this to excellence in nursing care delivery, patient safety and promoting learning throughout a nurse’s career.

Our focus is on preparing and developing nursing expertise, fostering critical inquiry and accountability to optimise nurses’ contribution to child health outcomes. There are opportunities to engage in a robust Starship nursing education programme and post graduate study in a supportive environment. We encourage interdisciplinary education through simulation.

We provide an extensive and comprehensive orientation to working in child and youth health environments in both inpatient and community settings. We cater for nurse graduates, new to service and nurses who have child health experience. Orientation provides foundational knowledge and continues for area specific speciality nursing requirements.

Our professional development and recognition programme provides opportunities for nurses to achieve their career aspirations and demonstrate their clinical competence. This programme is aligned to the Nursing Council of New Zealand requirements.
