Places to eat
Food on a Starship ward
Menus offering meal choices for patients for the following day are issued in the morning. Meal times are:
Breakfast - 7:30am - 8:30am
Lunch - 12:00 noon - 1:00pm
Dinner - 5:15pm - 6:15pm
Breakfast is provided for one parent or caregiver staying with their child in hospital. Unless you qualify for a meal voucher (see special circumstances outlined below), you are expected to make your own arrangements for lunch and dinner.
Tea and coffee making facilities are provided. All wards have a microwave, toaster and fridge in the ward kitchen. Some wards have a separate parent kitchen.
Meal Vouchers for parents or caregivers are given in the following circumstances:
Mothers who are breastfeeding or expressing and staying with their child in Starship
Caregivers requiring emergency support for first 24 hours of admission
Where social work assessment has decided there is extreme financial hardship
The vouchers are available from the charge nurse or social worker and may be redeemed at the Auckland City Hospital staff cafeteria.
Level 5 Auckland City Hospital
Jamaica Blue is a modern cafe with a range of fresh and ready to eat meals available. It is open Monday to Friday from 6.30am to 8pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 5pm.
Makete sells a wide variety of food including some ready-to-eat meals that can be purchased and heated on the ward. Opening hours are 7am to 7.30pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 5.30pm weekends
Opening hours are Monday to Friday 6am to 8pm, and Saturday and Sunday 8am - 8pm
Planet Espresso coffee bar on Level 5 is open 6:30am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday; and 7:30am to 5:00pm Saturday and Sunday. There is also a Planet Espresso in the Level 3 Atrium of Auckland City Hospital.
Grafton Staff Cafeteria
The main staff cafeteria is also open to patients and families. They serve a variety of hot and cold foods.
Tiny Bites cafe on Level 3 Starship serves a range of hot and cold foods, and drinks. Opening times are 7:00am - 4:00pm Monday to Friday only. Tiny Bites is not open on weekends or public holidays.
Te Whare Awhina
Te Whare Awhina is located on the Auckland Hospital site and provides accommodation primarily for whanau living outside of the Auckland region, who have a family member in hospital. It has a kitchen and dining room where families can cook their own meals. For more information on Te Whare Awhina, see places to stay.
Cafes and Shops on Park Road
Just two minutes walk from the hospital to Park Road, you will find a variety of places to purchase food, including a superette, several cafes and lunch bars.
The university medical school across the road from the hospital has a cafe that is open to the public.
